Coaching Courses: Level 1 Aims & Objectives
Rugby Ready Award

The WRU/IRB Rugby Ready course aims to support individual coaches, referees, and players in preparing to play the game and with good practice models for physical conditioning, technique, injury prevention and injury management.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

• Screen/profile your players before they start playing.
• Ensure your equipment and environment are safe, and develop an emergency plan.
• Ensure your players are aware of the need to prepare properly:
- Physical conditioning
- Lifestyle
-Warm up/Cool down

• Teach and re-teach safe techniques:
- Balance, stability and posture
- Tackle and 1-on-1 contact
- Scrum and line-out
- Ruck and maul

• Know how to deal with injuries:
- If in doubt, get help quickly and DO NOT move the player
- Have an awareness of dealing with less serious.

Course Overview
All stakeholders have a collective responsibility to ensure the game is played with a sense of fair play. Rugby is intensely physical so players must be continuously taught the importance of discipline. Everyone needs to promote fair play:
 
• Respect yourself, the opposition, the officials and the laws of the game.
• Win with honour, lose with dignity.
• Try to stay calm.
• The referee is in charge; support him/her by playing fair and respecting his/her decisions.

The course includes an introduction to  Long Term Player Development, pre-participation protocols, safety aspects, physical conditioning, aspects of play (including contact with and without the ball), and injury prevention and management.

Entry requirements
Minimum age for applicants is 16.

Course Arrangements/Outline
The course is 3hours in duration.
There is no formal assessment; informal on course appraisal will be given by course tutor.
Attendees have to access the online version of course at the IRB website, complete the online questionnaire and print out the certificate of completion. This certificate will need to be presented to the course leader at the WRU/UKCC L1 as evidence of completion of the course.
The Rugby Ready is a foundation course for WRU/UKCC L1 course.
